Last year, Operation Peacebulb set a Guinness World Record with 850 simultaneous bulb-planters. Join local community members Saturday, April 18th, from 9:00-11:00am for a massive bulb-planting event! The goal is to set a new record with 1000 individuals simultaneously planting bulbs.

Please bring your kids, friends, neighbors, work buddies, church group, class, senior pals, sports team, etc. The event will be at The White Oak Savanna (2425 Tannler Drive, West Linn). Bring a garden trowel or spade with you to help get the native bulbs in the ground. Bulbs supplied. Contact Roberta Schwarz if you would like to join this momentous planting event!

Eco-Tip: Use the Mug Wall /sustainability/2015/04/01/eco-tip-use-the-mug-wall/ Thu, 02 Apr 2015 00:48:41 +0000 http://blogs.pcc.edu/sustainability/?p=1137 unnamed (3)

Oh no, folks! Sylvania’s coffee mug board is nearly empty and needs more mugs to share. If you have any mugs that can be retired, contribute them to the community reusable mug board. You will help someone to not use a paper cup! If you know of faculty members with one of the many missing mugs please gently remind them to bring them back.

Eco-Tip: Turn off Computers at Night /sustainability/2015/03/18/eco-tip-turn-off-computers-at-night/ Wed, 18 Mar 2015 18:50:55 +0000 http://blogs.pcc.edu/sustainability/?p=1104 zTyO8Gx
By turning off your computer instead of leaving it in sleep mode, you can save 40 watt-hours per day. That adds up to 4 cents a day, or $14 per year. If you don’t want to wait for your computer to start up, set it to turn on automatically a few minutes before you get to work, or boot up while you’re pouring your morning cup ‘o joe! This tip comes from .

Friday, March 13, 9:00am-1:00pm
Cutting timbers and posts for the roof
Sylvania’s Learning Garden

The team did some nice planning last Friday sourcing reusable materials for the oven project.

This Friday they will cut and notch posts and have them ready for concrete after the inspector visits.

They hope to have our permit by next week, and then there will be some big work parties to get the roof finished so they can start on the oven next term.

Walk-ins are very welcome too.

Eco-Tip: Freecycle

Portland has a neat secret alternative to Craigslist’s free section: Freecycle. Well, it may not exactly be a secret, but it is sure a handy tool to clean your house of things you don’t want anymore. Or a great resource to find free things from your local Portland neighbors. Join or learn more about .

There is also an informal freecycle table at Sylvania. If you have good quality items that need a new home, bring them to the table in the lower CC mall near the cafeteria.

Successful Hard Drive Smashing Event /sustainability/2015/03/02/successful-hard-drive-smashing-event/ Mon, 02 Mar 2015 23:09:22 +0000 http://blogs.pcc.edu/sustainability/?p=1081 DSCN4787[1]
Sylvania Campus had their first Hard Drive Smashing event February 25, 2015 and it was a complete success!

20+ students, instructors, and staff smashed 234 hard drives & collected 152 other computer items for responsible eCycling! That’s approximately 351 lbs. of hard drives that were saved from the waste stream & a whole lot of data that won’t be available for identity theft – what a rewarding two hours!

Thanks to the Engineering students’ machines that held up under their first real world test, and thanks for all of your help in advertising, supporting, and participating in this event. Plans are in the works to continue our efforts during Earth Week and beyond.

Sylvania Environmental Club SOLVE Outing (Feb 28) /sustainability/2015/02/26/sylvania-environmental-club-solve-outing-feb-28/ Thu, 26 Feb 2015 18:16:07 +0000 http://blogs.pcc.edu/sustainability/?p=1018 Pulling IvyEnvironmental Club SOLVE Outing
Saturday, February 28, 9:00am-12:00pm
Ma Olsen’s Garden, St Helens Road & NW 108th, Portland

Such nice weather we’re having! Why not get out and help Oregon’s native plant species? If ridding hillsides of invasive species, replanting native plants, and uncovering hundred-year-old walls sounds like your thing, join the Sylvania’s Environmental Club in restoring the land near the downtown area that was once known as Linnton. The area was demolished in the 1960’s and today, it needs some TLC. Come join the Environmental Club, and help SOLVE in restoring this area.

Wear comfortable work clothes and sturdy shoes. The Oregonian in you should be prepared, but we’ll remind you to be ready to face wet and muddy conditions on the rough terrain. Don’t let that discourage you though! Volunteering makes you and your community look good.

If you would like to get involved with this event, send an email or smoke signal to either Lauren or Venus.

Successful eCycle Event at PCC Rock Creek /sustainability/2015/02/26/successful-ecycle-event-at-pcc-rock-creek/ Thu, 26 Feb 2015 18:15:22 +0000 http://blogs.pcc.edu/sustainability/?p=1004 The reclaim bins

(Above: The reclaim bins)

February 9th-11th ASPCC members at the Rock Creek campus hosted an eCycle event. What is an eCycle event? An eCycling event is where you take your old/unused electronics such as computers, cell phones, cameras, microwaves, etc to the event to be recycled! This helps keep electronics out of the waste stream and allows valuable parts to be reused/refurbished.

Rock Creeks eCycle event was full of activities, fun and chocolate! I attended the event February 11th, there was a card making station to make that special someone a handmade gift for valentines day. There was a selfie photo booth as well, where you were able to take a selfie with a fun valentines day background and have the chance to win a $50 giftcard to the bookstore. There was music, delicious chocolate and chips as well!
