Details about this class

Everyday Chemistry (CH100OL) is a fully online course with no scheduled meetings and free interactive eBook lectures (plan for about 1.5 hours/week). No physical textbook is needed, but you will need a home lab kit (details below).

Course Content Note (Week 5)

In Week 5, we explore the chemistry and societal context of smoke grenades. Some students may find this topic emotionally activating or personally sensitive. If you’d like support or guidance while engaging with the material, your instructor is happy to help and will approach all conversations with care and respect.

Lab Kit Requirements
  • Cost: ~$108 + shipping when purchased directly from Carolina (recommended)

  • ~$135+ through the PCC Bookstore voucher (financial aid eligible; no returns)

  • Order after the term begins, making sure it arrives by Week 3

  • International students: Carolina may not ship to all countries and shipping may cost $500+. Contact distancelearning@carolina.com or 866-332-4478 early if you plan to participate from outside the U.S.

  • Important Lab Participation Expectations

  • All labs are completed independently at home
You will be asked to submit selfie-style photos of yourself actively performing each experiment; these are shared only with your instructor for verification and academic integrity

  • One lab requires a short visit to a natural body of water (lake, river, etc.)

If you are not comfortable submitting verification photos, this course is not the right fit, and we want you to choose a learning environment where you feel fully safe and supported.

Approximate Weekly Time Commitment
  • Lectures + homework + quiz: 2–3 hrs/week

  • Discussion post: 0.5–2 hrs/week

  • Lab: ~3 hrs/week
