Working closely with industry and social service partners, PCC provides education and training that helps people move from minimum wage jobs into living wage, family supporting careers.

In 2019, Community Action, which is a Washington County-based nonprofit, launched a pilot program called Whole Family Approach to support the parents and guardians of children enrolled in local Head Start programs with healthcare career training. Powered by a robust partnership between Community Action, PCC’s Community Workforce Development and Institute for Health Professionals, the Department of Human Services, Worksystems, and the Oregon Employment Department, Whole Family Approach helped a cohort of Head Start parents enter PCC’s Patient Access Specialist Online Training Program during the 2019-20 academic year.

Opportunity Center Graduate Completes Career Launch Program and Earns a New Lease on Life /opportunity-center/2021/02/03/opportunity-center-graduate-completes-career-launch-program-and-earns-a-new-lease-on-life/ Wed, 03 Feb 2021 21:50:10 +0000 /opportunity-center/?p=312 Student Nahlee Suvanvej standing at Opportunity Center at 42nd Avenue with Mentor Tracee WellsNahlee Suvanvej drove to her Northeast Portland education outlet – the Opportunity Center at 42nd Avenue – to not just find a degree but a new lease on life.

The Humboldt Neighborhood resident had overcome past addiction issues and mental health challenges to move to a frame of mind where she could start looking for a training option. It wasn’t until the 38-year-old entered the “Discovery Options” class at the Opportunity Center at 42nd Avenue that everything became clear. Through that class, Suvanvej received intensive one-on-one coaching and guidance that allowed her to build skills, examine interests, and create a plan.

“What were once barriers in my life now serve as knowledge and insight to help others who may be experiencing similar sets of challenges,” said Suvanvej, who had earned an associate of transfer degree from Mt. Hood Community College in 2007. “My personal lived experience is valuable knowledge I can draw upon to inform my professional decision-making and understanding of others.”
