Rock Creek’s Hermanas Conference: A Peek into the future
Photos and story by Janis Nichols
It was a full day of thinking about new things for the 220 Latina girls who attended the 2015 Hermanas Conference at Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ’s Rock Creek Campus. The event, sponsored by PCC and Intel, is meant to encourage students in grades 9-12 to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Following a welcome from Rock Creek Campus President Sandra Fowler-Hill, and a keynote address by Juanita Kurtin, co-founder of Pacific Light Technologies, the students headed across the campus to 8Â topic-specific workshops all intended to whet their STEM appetites. For many of the participants, it was their first time on a college campus. One young Latina spoke for her group when she said, “We’ll be back.”
