How do students communicate their disability accommodation needs to their instructors? /ask-the-panther/215/ Wed, 19 Oct 2022 18:36:00 +0000 /ask-the-panther/2009/05/06/how-do-students-communicate-their-disability-accommodation-needs-to-their-instructors/ Students communicate their accommodation needs by a letter called “Approved Academic Accommodations.” This letter is prepared by the student and their Accessible Ed & Disability Resources counselor each term for each class. It explains that the student is working with Accessible Ed & Disability Resources (but doesn’t identify the specific disability). It also outlines the accommodations the student is responsible for, those that Accessible Ed & Disability Resources will provide, and those that the instructor is requested to assist with. Students meet privately with instructors to present their letter. They discuss how best to meet the accommodation requirements and work together to put the adjustments in place. The Accessible Ed & Disability Resources counselor can answer questions about the appropriateness of accommodations and how best to make them successful.

Will I have the same disability accommodations at PCC that were on my IEP In high school? /ask-the-panther/212/ Wed, 19 Oct 2022 18:33:00 +0000 /ask-the-panther/2009/05/06/will-i-have-the-same-disability-accommodations-at-pcc-that-were-on-my-iep-in-high-school/ Yes and no. Accommodations provided in your high school were based on special education and IDEA requirements. Accommodations provided in college are based on ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act requirements. Some of the accommodations you received in high school will be the same at PCC others will not be the same. Examples of accommodations that would not be offered in college would be: a personal aid, one-to-one instruction, and modifying essential course requirements.

Meet with a counselor in the Accessible Ed & Disability Resources office to discuss available accommodations.
