The sense of light and space in this large charcoal drawing are created almost exclusively by line weight and texture; it could almost be a woodcut. The gnarly patterns of bark and rock and water may evoke the fanciful forests of the English Illustrator Arthur Rackham, but this drawing was made on sight from nature. Â Trowbridge, who is a painter of landscapes with a subtle color sensitivity, has managed to create the feeling of color just in black and white.
